Miklós Konkoly Thege (1842-1916) was a wealthy Hungarian nobleman who established a private observatory at Ógyalla, nowadays a state institution known as the Konkoly Observatory. This interesting book is the proceedings of a workshop held in 1999 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Astronomical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, based on the Konkoly Observatory. There are five parts to the book. The first is about the history of the Konkoly Observatory and its activities. Konkoly Thege was very active in instrumental matters - his book Praktische Anleitung ... (1883) was influential during the period when astrophysics was undergoing its first period of rapid development, and a copy of it exists in the SAAO collection. Konkoly was a pioneer in astronomical photometry and spectroscopy and made use of the Zöllner visual photometer as well as the schraffierkassette method for photographic photometry. The second part of the book is concerned with early astrophysics in various countries. The article on Japanese astronomy around 1899 (by M Takeuti) deals with a period not covered by articles in English. At this time, Japan was still recovering from the two centuries of isolation imposed by the Edo Shogunate, and research astronomy was just beginning. CD Laney's Astronomy in the Dismal Swamp, a quirky collection of stories about the Royal Observatory, Cape, follows. Other chapters deal with the Marseille Observatory and the French astronomer Jules Janssen (1824-1907). Two articles by J Hearnshaw and K Staubermann deal with the history of astronomical photometry in the third part. The fourth part is about early female astronomers and the difficulties they faced, including paragraphs on Dorothea Klumpke (who married Isaac Roberts), Agnes Clerke, Maria Mitchell and the famous ladies of the Harvard Observatory who worked on spectral classification and the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. Most of the last part is a fascinating account of the cosmological development of General Relativity by Einstein, de Sitter, Lanczos, Lemaître Friedmann and Robertson, and how they influenced and were influenced by the observers. Nowadays one tends to think of Edwin Hubble in connection with the expansion of the Universe, but he was only one of several to whom the credit for this work is due. The article on this subject by H Duerbeck and W Seitter attemps to give an unbiassed history of early developments.

A breathtaking survey of the richness of astronomical theories and illustrations through the ages.

Throughout history, the mysterious dark skies above us have inspired our imaginations in countless ways, influencing our endeavours in science and philosophy, religion, literature and art. Picturing the Sky is a truly beautiful book showing the richness of astronomical theories and illustrations in Western civilization through the ages, exploring their evolution, and comparing ancient and modern throughout. From Greek verse, mediaeval manuscripts and Victorian poetry to spacecraft photographs and computer-generated star charts, the unprecedented wealth of these portrayals is quite breathtaking. How did philosophers and scientists try to explain the order which seems to govern celestial motion? How did geometers and artists measure and map the skies? How many different answers have been proposed for the most fundamental of all questions: When and how did our world come about? Who inhabits the Heavens - gods, angels or extraterrestrials? The anwers to these questions can be found among these stunning pages.

<text>The author does not attempt to give a general survey of early astronomy; rather, he chooses to present a few episodes and treats them in detail. However, first he provides the necessary astronomical background in his descriptive account of what you can see when you look at the More...

sky with the naked eye, unblinkered by received knowledge, but with curiosity and wit. Chapter 1 deals with the arithmetical astronomy of ancient Mesopotamia where astronomy first was made an exact science. Next are treated Greek geometrical models for planetary motion, culminating in Ptolemy's equant models in his Almagest. Ptolemy does not assign them absolute size in this work, but, as is shown here, if we scale the models properly, they will yield good values, not only of the directions to the planets, but of the distances to them, as well. Thus one can immediately find the dimensions of the Copernican System from parameters in the Almagest - we have evidence that Copernicus did just that. Further, Islamic astronomers' modifications of Ptolemy's models by devices using only uniform circular motion are discussed, as are Copernicus's adoption of some of them. finally, it is made precise which bothersome problem was resolved by the heliocentric hypothesis, as it was by the Tychonic arrangement. Next, the Ptolemaic System, the first cosmological scheme to incorporate quantitative models, is described as Ptolemy himself did it in a recenlty recovered passage from his Planetary Hypotheses. Here he does assign absolute size to his models in order to fit them into the snugly nested spherical shells that made up his universe. This much maligned system was, in fact, a harmonious construct that remained the basis for how educated people thought of their world for a millennium and a half. Finally, after a brief review of the geometry of the ellipse, the author gives an elementary derivation of Kepler's equation, and shows how Kepler solved it, and further proves that a planet moves very nearly uniformly around the empty focus of its orbit. Thus an eccentric circular orbit with the empty focus as the equant point gives a good approximation to Kepler motions. The result of combining two such motions is then shown to be close to Ptolemy's planetary model
