Wat hij zag schreef hij op in de Sidereus nuncius (‘Bericht van de sterren’), een boekje vol bewijzen voor de juistheid van Copernicus’ heliocentrische model. De inhoud was explosief, want in tegenspraak met een aantal Bijbelpassages. Om te voorkomen dat de leer van Copernicus verboden zou worden, sprong Galilei in 1616 voor hem op de bres met zijn Brief aan groothertogin Christina. De wereld zag er, acht jaar na Lipperhey’s ontdekking, totaal anders uit. Galilei’s Sidereus nuncius en zijn Brief aan groothertogin Christina waren bestemd voor een algemeen publiek, en zijn dan ook uitstekend leesbaar.
