Wiskundigen maken in hun denken creatief gebruik van intuïtie, analogieën en metaforen, paradoxen, dromen, plotselinge invallen. De logica daarin is ver te zoeken, het gevoel overheerst. Het gevoel als dat van een kunstenaar die zoekend te werk gaat. Dat zoeken is wiskunde. In zestien hoofdstukken wordt gefilosofeerd over de warrige wegen van het oplossen van problemen door wiskundigen. Boordevol anekdotes over bekende wiskundigen als Poincaré. Hoe ze tot ideeën kwamen en hoe lang het soms wel duurde. Ook geven twaalf Nederlandse wiskundigen, vooral hoogleraren van technische universiteiten, hun visie op dit soort zaken. Kan wiskunde wel samengaan met geloof? Is ratio belangrijker dan intuïtie? Wat is de rol van toeval? Een beetje kennis van wiskunde helpt, maar veel is niet nodig. Het boek is een beschouwing hoe wiskundigen denken en doen om bewijzen te leveren, maar het zou – met andere voorbeelden – ook geschreven kunnen worden voor tal van andere beroepen.
