Beschrijving

This book is now rather aged, but this is, in its own way, an advantage. Professor Fritzsch, with Murray Gell-Mann, formulated the first QCD theories describing the colour interaction active between quarks.
In this book, Fritzsch lays out the inner working of QCD from a theorist's perspective. He starts from the most basic premise at the heart of particle physics -- symmetry principles, and shows step-by-step how these necessarily imply the quark structure of the proton and neutron. He then goes on to show how their theoretical findings square with experimental results.
In this book you will learn the basics of particle spin, vacuum polarization, quark confinement (asymptotic freedom and infrared slavery). Most interestingly, he elucidates how the pioneer quark physicists used their understanding of quantum electrodynamics -- the physics of electrons and positrons mainly -- in a comparative way to build up our understanding of the nucleon's innards. In much the same way, he shows how comparative differences between the mesons and baryons can yield insight into the nature of quarks.
