Ces notes ont été rédigées par Einstein, à l'âge de 67 ans, pour le volume VII de Library of living philosophers, intitulé Albert Einstein : philosopher-scientist (1949). Elles ont été publiées en volume séparé pour la première fois en mars 1979, aux Etats-Unis. Il s'agit d'un autoportrait scientifique: "comment, quand et pour quelles raisons, le savant pensa de la façon qui fut la sienne et à quelles conclusions l'ont conduit ses recherches à tel ou tel moment de sa vie". Un document précieux.
