<text>Cet ouvrage d'histoire des idées et de philosophie des sciences rassemble plusieurs études dont le point commun est d'analyser les conséquences majeures de la découverte scientifique de l'infini. Ainsi, Alexandre Koyré montre comment la révolution galiléenne ou la découverte du calcul infinitésimal par Leibniz et Newton ont profondément modifié la conscience qu'a l'homme de lui-même et de sa place dans l'univers. La représentation d'un cosmos dépourvu d'un centre à partir duquel tout s'organise constitue ainsi une révolution spirituelle autant que scientifique. Dès lors que les astres ne naviguent plus splendidement au-dessus de nos têtes, mais qu'au mouvement général de l'univers nous avons conscience de participer, portés par une planète parmi d'autres, nous semblons désormais contraints à une forme de relativisme imprégnée d'angoisse. L'ouvrage de référence pour comprendre les implications intellectuelles et morales de la science moderne.</text>

                <text>

	De afstanden in het heelal strekken zich uit van enkele honderdduizenden kilometers naar de maan, tot vele miljarden lichtjaren naar de grens van ons waarnemingsvermogen. En evenals afstanden zijn ook afmetingen in het heelal vaak astronomisch groot. Waarom zijn sommige sterren honderdmaal zo klein als de zon en andere duizendmaal zo groot? Hoe kan de planeet Mars, die maar half zo groot is als de aarde, een vulkaan hebben die wel driemaal zo hoog is als de Mount Everest? Wat zijn de grootste structuren in de kosmos en hoe konden die ontstaan uit miscroscopisch kleine dichtheidsvariaties vlak na de Oerknal? En... hoe groot is het heelal zelf eigenlijk?

	Net als de objecten in het heelal zijn ook levende wezens onderworpen aan de wetten der natuurkunde, en die pakken anders uit voor grote dan voor kleine levende wezens. Kan een wezen ter grootte van een mier een 'cultuur' hebben als de mens? En een dier zo groot als een mammoet? Zijn grote dieren ook intelligenter omdat ze grotere hersens hebben? Kunnen insekten werkelijk niet groter worden? En waarom zijn er geen landdieren zo groot als de blauwe vinvis? Kunnen olifanten trouwens harder lopen dan konijnen? En waarom kan een vlieg over het plafond lopen? Wat bepaalt eigenlijk hoe klein een levend wezen kan zijn?

	Op deze en talrijke andere vragen die verband houden met oorzaken en gevolgen van schaalverschillen, zowel in de kosmos als in de biosfeer, probeert dit boek een antwoord te geven.

                <text>This research volume outlines the scientific foundations that are central to our current understanding of light scattering, absorption and polarization processes involving ice crystals. It also demonstrates how data from satellite remote sensing of cirrus clouds can be combined with radiation parameterizations in climate models to estimate the role of these clouds in temperature and precipitation responses to climate change. Providing a balanced treatment of the fundamentals and applications, this book synthesizes the authors' own work, as well as that of other leading researchers in this area. Numerous illustrations are included, including three-dimensional schematics, to provide a concise discussion of the subject and enable easy visualization of the key concepts. This book is intended for active researchers and advanced graduate students in atmospheric science, climatology, and remote sensing, as well as scholars in related fields such as ice microphysics, electromagnetic wave propagation, geometric optics, radiative transfer and cloud-climate interactions.
